HSEE 2022: Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) takes complete responsibility for conducting HSEE (Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination) 2022 for the candidates who want to seek admission in 5 years integrated Master of Arts (MA). HSEE 2022 Application Form:

To apply for HSEE 2022, you need to collect the application form from the official website. Once you fetch the application form, start filling it with the appropriate person and qualification details. Each detail that you fill in the application must be checked twice because no corrections will be done later.

Application Fee:

• The application fee for SC/ ST / PwD Category candidates will be Rs.1200 and for other categories, it will be Rs.2400.
• Make a payment of the application via modes such as Credit Card/ Net Banking/Debit Card. You can also pay the fee via Indian Bank Challan generated during the application process.

Note: Bank charges of Rs 40/- will be applicable.

Steps To Apply for HSEE 2022 Application Form:

• First, Log on to the site https://hsee.iitm.ac.in
• Select from the menu “Apply Online” and follow the instructions on the site.
• Now upload, Photograph, Signatures, and Supporting Documents.
• Pay the Application Fee.
• The completed application form has to be submitted online only, along with the scanned photograph, signature, and relevant certificates.

Documents to be attached with the application form:

• Scanned photographs and signatures of the candidate.
• Scanned copy of 10th class Public Examination certificate for name and proof of date of birth.
• Scanned copy of 10+2 class mark sheet (if already passed 10+2 examination).
• Scanned copy of category certificate (GEN-EWS-Undertaking / OBC-NCL-Undertaking / SC / ST).
• Scanned copy of PwD/Dyslexia/Scribe certificate, if applicable.

Exam Center:

The entrance examination will be conducted in the following 16 cities:

Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Coimbatore, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jammu, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, New Delhi, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Candidate must have completed class XII from a Central or State Board recognized by the Association of Indian Universities
• Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a Board or University recognized by the Association of Indian Universities.
• Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defense Academy.
• Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.
• Any Public School, Board, or University examination in India or a foreign country is recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities.
• H.S.C. vocational examination.
• Class XII skill courses of CBSE.
• General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London, Cambridge, or Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.
• High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.
• Candidates who have completed Class XII (or equivalent) examination outside India or from a Board not specified above should produce a certificate from the Association of Indian Universities to the effect that the examination they have passed is equivalent to the Class XII examination.
• In case the Class XII examination is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination earlier.

Exam Pattern:

• The time duration of the exam will be 3 hours. The exam will consist of two parts. Part I includes 150 minutes and Part II (essay writing section) in 30 minutes.
• Part I include: English and Comprehension Skill, Analytical and Quantitative Ability, General Studies (Indian economy, Indian Society and Culture, World Affairs), Environment and Ecology
• Part II include: Essay writing on the general topic consisting of description, or/and reflection or/and discussion

HSEE 2022 Syllabus:

The syllabus for the examination is divided into two parts -Part I and Part II. Syllabus for Part I consisted of English which covers 25% marks of Part I, Analytical and Quantitative Ability which will cover another 25% marks of Part I and General Studies in four sub-parts which will cover another 50% marks of Part I. Part II will consist of essay writing.

PART 1­- English:

This section will have consisted of questions where the candidate’s ability to understand and the use of standard English will be used. Also, questions will be asked where literary language can be checked. Questions are related to the following areas:

• Reading skills: In this, the candidate will be provided with the passage and they read the given passage/s to test their comprehension skills and answer the comprehension questions. Or This section will test the candidates’ reading comprehension skills of a given passage.
• Grammar: This section will check the candidate’s knowledge of English grammar, comprised of sentence structure and usage, verb patterns, the use of tenses, articles, active and passive constructions, etc.
• Vocabulary: This section will test the vocabulary and the ability to understand the meaning, structure, and collocation of words.

Analytical and Quantitative Ability:

This section tests the candidate’s analytical skills and quantitative abilities. Questions will be the following:

• Highest Common Factor and Lowest Common Multiple, Numbers, Algebra, Calendar, Basic Statistics – Average, Ratio and Proportion, Percentages, Profit and Loss, Simple and Compound Interest, Discount, Age sums, Work and time, linear equations, elementary trigonometry.
• Data interpretation, Analytical reasoning, Logical reasoning, Brainteasers, and Patterns.

General Studies:

1. Indian Economy:

This section will test the understanding of some basic economic concepts and awareness of key issues about the Indian economy with a focus on the developments after independence. The concepts and issues that are covered are as follows:

• Major Economic problems: Poverty, measurement, trends, Unemployment and Inequality -concepts, sectoral distribution and policies, inflation – trends, causes, and remedies.
• Understanding the Economy: Scarcity, economic systems, and their characteristics, opportunity cost, resource allocation, features of market economies, forces of demand and supply, the elasticity of demand and supply.
• Main Features of Indian Economy: Natural resources; human resources -population size and composition, occupational distribution, literacy, and education.
• Economic Growth and Development: Meaning and measurement of economic growth, national income concepts and trends, stages of development, trends in savings and investment; human development index, health, and health care policies, national policy on education. Planning in India: Five-Year Plans – objectives, priorities, and problems
• Sectoral Development: Agriculture – Green Revolution and technological changes, current issues and policies; industry-evolution of industrial policies in India (from 1948), strategies for Industrial development, small and medium industries, public and private sectors, infrastructure, transport, and communication, service sector, etc.
• Foreign Trade and International Economy: foreign exchange reserves and trade policy, the balance of payments, I.M.F., W.T.O., international aid.
• Money, Banking and Public Finance: Concepts of money and measures of the money supply.

1. b) Indian Society and Culture:

• Structure of Indian Society: Institutions of Marriage, Family and Kinship, Caste, Class and Tribe, Political institutions, Demographic Indicators, and Trends.
• Social Change in India: Sanskritization, Westernization, Modernisation and Secularization, Social Movements and Regionalism, Panchayati Raj Institutions & Governance, Commissions and Policy Interventions, Affirmative Action Programme of the Government.
• Medieval and Modern Indian History: Delhi Sultanate and Mughal era; British Raj; Uprising of 1857; (Social) Reform, and Resistance Movements; Indian National Movement and the Emergence of the Indian nation.
• Indian Philosophy and Thinkers: Jainism, Buddhism, Sufism, Gandhi, Orthodox Systems, Sikhism, Swami Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
• Indian Traditions and Knowledge Systems: Architecture, Education, Ethics, Classical dance forms, Language and Grammar, Theatre, Textiles Indian Literature, Painting, Music, Mathematical and Medical systems.

1. c) World Affairs:

• The emergence of the US and USSR; the emergence of the UN system; the Cold War and nuclear race; disintegration of Soviet Union, a decline of Communism and rise of nationalism; Arab-Israel conflict; India and the World; NAM and role of India; India-China and India- Pakistan relations, China and the World, conflict, and wars.
• Democracy and Development; Challenges to democracy; North-South divide on issues of development; UN and its various developmental and peacekeeping operations; Nuclearisation and Non-proliferation; India in SAARC and ASEAN; International terrorism, fundamentalism and the War on Terror; New centers of power in Asia, Indo-US relations, Latin America and Africa.
• Hunger and Poverty; Human Rights, Democracy and Development; Issues of Race, Ethnicity, and Gender; Deprived Classes and minority politics; Environmental degradation and green politics; Religion in the contemporary world; Culture and Civilization; Emergence of various popular mass movements; Globalization and changing economic, cultural and political landscape; Mass media and cultural change.

1. d) Environment and Ecology:

• Global Environmental Picture: Population Growth, Global Atmospheric Changes, Degradation of Soils, Loss of Biodiversity.
• Ecosystems: Structure of Ecosystems, Biotic Structure, Feeding, and non-feeding Relationships, Categories of Organisms, Ecosystems and how they work, Elements in Living and Non-living Systems, Energy Laws, Nutrient Cycling.
• Pollution: Major forms of Pollution and their Impact, Primary and Secondary Pollutants, Global Warming, Control Strategies, Indoor Pollutants, International Treaties.
• Principles of Solar Energy, Biomass Energy, Hydropower, Wind Power, Ocean Thermal Energy, Geothermal Energy, and Tidal power.

PART II:

• Topics for the essay writing in Part II will be based on current affairs and General Knowledge. The essay needs to build an argument, demonstrate a clear perspective, and be substantiated with instances if needed.

Admit Card:

Those who submit the application form successfully will receive the admit card from the official website. Download the admit card on the given date. This is the most important document containing information about the examination. Make sure to keep the admit card safely and readily available for you till the admission process gets over. In case of any discrepancy in the admit card, contact the Chairman, HSEE-2022, immediately via phone/email/fax.

Exam Result:

HSEE 2022 results will be announced via online mode using the official website. You need to use the link to check the website and collect all the crucial details related to it. The merit list will be released (category-wise) after the result declaration. Make sure that you keep the hard copy of the result with you for further reference.

Re-grading and Re-totalling:

Candidates must know that Part I is a computer-based test so there shall be no re-grading and re-totaling in Part I. In addition to this, re-grading and re-totaling will not take place in Part I

Cutoff:

To successfully clear the examination, candidates need to acquire the minimum possible marks. Candidates belonging to the OBC-NCL category should score at least 45% marks in the HSEE 2022 examination. A rank list will be prepared for the candidates who score 50% in the examination. A separate merit list will be released category-wise. PwD rank lists will also be published separately in which candidates need to secure 25% in the examination. Allotment of seats will be done based on the merit list. If a candidate fails to seek admission then his/her seat is allotted to the next eligible candidate available in the list.

HSEE Admission 2022:

Candidates can be admitted to the institution based on the Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE). The programme has a total number of 58 seats for both Development Studies and English Studies streams; each stream will have 29 seats. Allocations of seats to individual streams will be made based on the choice of stream preference of the candidate and availability of seats under each discipline.
